How to Play Sudoku
Sudoku is played on a 9x9 grid, which is divided into nine 3x3 boxes. Some cells start pre-filled with numbers. Your goal is to fill every empty cell so that each row, each column, and each 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
- Each number may appear only once per row.
- Each number may appear only once per column.
- Each number may appear only once per 3x3 box.
- There is always exactly one correct solution — use logic and deduction to find it.
The Daily Puzzle
A new puzzle unlocks at midnight in your local timezone, and you get one attempt per device. Because every player sees the exact same puzzle on the same day, the leaderboard is a fair test of speed, accuracy, and clean logical thinking. Each day's puzzle is freshly generated and guaranteed to have a unique solution.
Difficulty Schedule
To keep every day interesting, the difficulty follows a fixed weekly rotation:
- Sunday & Monday — Easy
- Tuesday & Wednesday — Medium
- Thursday & Friday — Hard
- Saturday — Expert
How Scoring Works
Your final score is calculated in real time as you play. Every correct number placed earns base points multiplied by the day's difficulty — harder puzzles are worth more. Placing several correct numbers in a row builds a streak that adds a bonus of up to +50 points per placement. Every mistake costs 25 points and resets your streak. The base value also decreases slowly over time (by 5 points every 30 seconds, down to a minimum of 50), so solving faster earns more.
The leaderboard ranks players by total score, then by completion time for ties. Your total number of errors is also displayed, so the fastest sloppy solve rarely beats a clean, careful one.
Tips & Strategies
- Scan each row, column, and box for the numbers already present before placing anything.
- Use pencil notes to track the candidates a cell could hold, then eliminate them as you fill the rest of the grid.
- Look for single candidates: if a cell has only one possible number, place it.
- Work the hidden singles — a number that can only go in one cell of a row, column, or box.
- Don't rush. Accuracy earns more points than speed alone, because mistakes reset your streak and cost points.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many times can I play each day?
One puzzle per day, per device. Each browser is identified by a device fingerprint, so you get exactly one attempt at today's puzzle. A new puzzle unlocks at midnight in your local timezone.
Is Daily Sudoku free to play?
Yes. The daily puzzle, leaderboard, and all core features are completely free. The site is supported by non-intrusive advertising.
How is the difficulty chosen each day?
Difficulty rotates on a weekly schedule: Sunday and Monday are Easy, Tuesday and Wednesday are Medium, Thursday and Friday are Hard, and Saturday is Expert. Everyone gets the same difficulty on the same day, so the leaderboard is always a fair comparison.
What happens if I make a mistake?
Wrong numbers count against your score. You can erase any cell and try again, but total errors are recorded and shown on the leaderboard, so accuracy matters.
Can I play older puzzles?
No. The game is designed around a single daily puzzle. Each day brings a new, uniquely generated Sudoku that nobody has solved before.
How do streaks work?
Every correct number you place adds to your streak. Consecutive correct placements earn a growing bonus (up to +50 points). A single mistake resets your streak to zero.
